Is Having a Sun Tan Safe?
By Helen Bolam
Tanning
Since Coco Chanel in the 1920's, sun tanning has been a must have for all. But in the 21st century, it seems to have taken on a life of its own. There are people who think its attractive to look like they've been tangoed. Not a good look. If your like me don't have a tan at all and prefer to be pale and interesting. Of course some people really suit there tan, and others like to get their's out of a bottle. So what are the affects of all that tanning?
The skin's response to UV (Ultra Violet radiation) rays from the sun, is to burn. This exposure to UV rays produces melanocytes. Creating the brown pigment melanin, this darkens the cells of the epidermis giving you a tan. This is the body's natural protection against more UV radiation.
Tanning, is it Bad for You?
Enzymes are triggered in order to repair the damage brought on by the UV rays damaging the skin's epidermal cells. DNA is not always repaired successfully, with damage that hasn't been repaired leaving your skin with the risk of skin cancer. Staying in the sun without protection can lead to sagging skin, spots and wrinkles.
UVA, UVC and UVB, what's the difference?
These are the sun's three different wavelengths. UVC is not seen as a threat and naturally absorbed by the ozone layer. UVA accounts for 95% of the earth's UVR. UVA rays are around during daylight hours. UVB varies season to season.
UVA is the main wavelength behind photo-aging and is more carcinogenic than UVB. But both UVA and UVB can cause skin cancer.
Does Melanin Protect My Skin?
Darker skin has the better protection, than that of lighter skin, against skin cancer and sunburn. This only applies to those with naturally darker skin.
With all of this information, for me the safest option is to apply plenty of sun tan lotion, wear a hat, and be safe. Not the most fashionable way to be on holiday, but the only way to stop your skin from ageing prematurely and protect against skin cancer.
